One year of Hackclub @ NFHS

hackclub
(this is not a very technical post, just more about the story of HC@NFHS)
About one year ago, June 2025, Hackclub @ NFHS became an entity in Hack Club and my school.
This post was originally planned to be posted on the 22nd, my last day of school ever, unfortunately it didn't work out.
But I am creating this post to fully explain the story of HC@NFHS before I leave.
I also intend for this post to be something that I can look back at, to understand what I thought about HC@NFHS during this time.
Any people referred to will not be mentioned by name, being anonymized, if you were near HC@NFHS during this year, you may know who I am speaking about though.
I filled out the papers and submitted it, fully bringing HC@NFHS into existence, after filling out the required forms in Hack Club.
An interesting story followed this.
The Story
We didn't have any meetings for our first months, as right after we were created, summer break started :3
But once we got into the fall of 2025, and started our new school year, we were able to have a few meetings.
These meetings took place in the room of my school's computer science teacher, after school, wednesdays.
Our computer science teacher was our advisor, providing us a place to meet and allowing us to meet at our school.
(this is one of the few things that stayed constant throughout, meetings after school, on wednesdays)
We were able to have only a few meetings during this time, but being able to have any meetings at all was a triumph then.
Starting November-ish, we started to have issues. Due to our computer science teacher leaving for a month without warning, we were not able to have a single real hour long meeting, we were able to hold a "mini-meeting" during our home room time, but this wasn't enough time to do anything worthwhile really.
A quick tangent
Before they left, our computer science teacher started to use Hack Club for assignments in their class.
They used Boba Drops specifically, with the money from the submitted websites going to HC@NFHS.
This also later happened with Swirl. We ended up using this money for food at our meetings.
This does not really have an impact on the story, I just thought it was interesting.
Around this time, November-ish, our computer science teacher announced that they were leaving our school. They said that they were moving to a technical campus near the school.
This meant though, that starting 2026, we had no advisor for HC@NFHS, meaning even fewer meetings than earlier.
Before this happened though, our computer science teacher did say that they would help us run our meetings, which would've been nice, but in practice, they never really replied to my emails, and didn't end up helping us that much, so we were essentially on our own.
Before they left though, they did sign up HC@NFHS to the 2026 freshman orientation at our high school. It was debated within ourselves about wether or not we should go, due to us not having a leader, but in the end we decided to go anyway.
At the event, we ended up being placed next to the testing advisor for our school, they ran a club about recycling.
We ended up speaking with them, and they ended up agreeing to takeover HC@NFHS as our advisor, and let us have meetings in the counseling room of the school.
Thats where we are now, with the testing advisor advising our club, allowing us to meet significantly more regularly than before.
Our final meeting is the 26th.
The Future of Hackclub @ NFHS
Unfortunately, the future of HC@NFHS is uncertain, as every single member is graduating this year, we are all seniors, meaning that there will be no one to take over.
All of our advertising/outreach attempts were unsuccessful as well, meaning we are not sure what will happen next year.
Now that the new CS teacher is at my school, I was able to give them my contact information, to pass on to anyone who is interested in running the club in the future, to allow me to pass on control to them.
Until then, our website will continue to run, hopefully eventually ending up with a new leader taking over, and taking control of the website.
